The section that I chose to focus on this week from Week One's electronic newsletter was the CDF Speakers Bureau. CDF stands for Children's Defense Fund. The Speakers Bureau shows a list of several different individuals that are speaking out about several different topics. A few of the topics that these individuals are speaking out about are: Poverty, Federal Budget, Health and Mental Health, Education, Child Welfare and many more. The outside links lead to information on different problems around the United States that have the Children's Defense Fund as a part of their state.
The section that I focus on today does not give any information on child equity. One of the important things that I learned from this website is I learned more about Marian Wright Edelman and why she was so important to the early childhood education field.
Chelsea, What topic do believe is most important to look at and tackle the issues that come with it? I believe that the federal budget is where it begins. These government needs to first begin and make sure that every single program is equal and each child is getting the same treatment and experience as any other child. Does the Children's Defense Fund provide funding for all states or just certain ones? I know some information on Marian Wright Edelman, but is she the founder of the CDF? Thanks for your post! - Brittany
ReplyDeleteIt seems that the newsletter you researched had a lot of interesting topics! Poverty, mental health, child welfare, and education are all very hot topics! The website I picked in the beginning of the course was NAEYC and while I appreciate all the information the site provides me, I wish it would cover more of the interesting topics. Such was the ones you have mentioned.

It sounds like there are a lot of issues covered by the CDF related to equity in early childhood education and care. I agree with Brittany above, that it all comes back to the Federal budget and policy, not just as a source of funding, but in setting the bar higher for all early childhood programs in the U.S. This also ties into the message sent by the House and Senate, where we often hear the phrase "Family Values" spoken by politicians who in the next breath advocate for cutting healthcare, food stamps, Head Start, TANF, public education, and family services.
ReplyDeleteChelsea,
ReplyDeleteYou have a great post. What are your overall thoughts on the CDF?
What are some things that the speaker says about these topics? Can you tell me a little of what you learned about Marian Wright Edelman and why she is important to the early childhood field?
